To receive Green Commerce Bureau certification you don’t have to do everything on the checklist, but you must complete the “Required Measures” in each category. The set of optional measures is provided to give businesses flexibility in their approach to becoming certified.

Reduce (Choose at least 4 required measures):

Design marketing materials that require no envelope

Reduce junk mail by removing your business from national databases

Eliminate duplicate mailings of subscriptions

Update your mailing list annually to avoid duplicate mailings to your customers

Reduce junk faxes by contacting the sender and requesting permanent deletion of your number

Make two-sided printing and copying standard practice in your business

E-mail staff memos and schedules instead of printing individual copies for all employees

Re-Use (Choose at least 4 required measures):

Donate, sell or exchange unwanted furniture, supplies, electronics, etc.

Reuse envelopes and file folders

Train housekeeping staff to reuse clean trash liners

Use the back side of previously used paper for notes, drafts, fax machines, printers, etc.

Refill existing toner cartridges

Reuse packaging materials

Recycle (Choose at least 4 required measures):

Recycle or reuse paper including cardboard, mixed paper, newspaper and office paper

Glass, paper and aluminum

Toner or inkjet cartridges

Fluorescent light bulbs

Batteries – button, alkaline, NiCad, lithium ion, etc.

Compost all organics including food and yard discards, soiled paper products, and compostable food containers.

Carpet – many of the leading carpet manufacturers will recycle your old carpet

Purchasing (Choose at least 4 required measures):

Purchase copy, computer and fax paper with a minimum 59% post consumer waste content

Purchase used or refurbished equipment and/or furniture

Upgrade desktop computers instead of purchasing new ones

Eliminate paper hand towels by installing air hand dryers in restrooms

Purchase letterhead, envelopes and business cards with minimum 50% post consumer waste

Purchase marketing materials with the minimum of 50% post consumer waste content

Purchase janitorial paper with minimum 35% post consumer waste content
